A casual browse online will reveal that there are many coaches and mentors available. It can be overwhelming reading through all the beautiful glossy information on the website and being caught in the whirlwind of thinking and feeling that this person will be the answer to all our problems. It can be helpful to have a checklist to contemplate when looking for a mentor or coach to make sure you are supported by in your work and well-being in the way you want to be.

Below are nine things you might like to consider whilst reviewing a mentor's suitability to you.

Nine Points to Consider About Your Potential Mentor/Coach

These points are neither exhaustive nor in order of priority. Your individual priorities will be different from your peers and colleagues. Also consider what your ideals and needs are in order to help you serve your well-being and highest purpose 'in spiritus' - your way.

1. Personality

When looking to engage anyone for any sort of work, you will no doubt do some research on them. You will no doubt look for any videos you can find - to get an idea of how effectively they convey their ideas and philosophies. It is likely you will also look to find blog posts or articles that they have written. In assessing these materials, you will gain a feel for them as a coach or mentor. Does their approach and their personality appeal to you or repel you? Is this person someone you can see yourself working with for an extended period of time?

2. Experience

Any coach or mentor will have runs on the board - not only in the class room, real lived life experience as well. What life lessons can they share with you that will help your learning and business? What has their journey been like? Have they faced significant adversity and overcome it in a way that is inspiring and courageous? If so, it is more likely that they will inspire you to fulfill your greatest potential, knowing that "if I've done it, you can too!"

3. Style

When you look at their programs and packages, what do you notice? Is there a single outcome based approach? Or are there options which have flexible and solution-focused outcomes? What approach will serve you best? Which approach will serve you and your business needs and well-being most effectively? Sometimes, we need a straight-forward technical package - learn a process for example. Other times, when learning a soft skill or more indepth range of skills, a flexible solution based outcome may be optimal. Consider what your business and well-being needs are to assist in deciding what style and approach will be ideal.

4. Delivery

Strongly related to their personality as described above, when looking at their methods of delivery have you heard their voice or seen their mannerisms? Do you think to yourself, oh that's going to drive me crazy or that's so inspiring, I can't wait to work with them? Can you see yourself easily learning from them?

5. Accessibility

When you went searching for your coach or mentor, how easy was it to find them online? Did you have a referral or did you hear about them via word or mouth? When you went looking for the, did you find them readily? Accessibility, in line with sound boundaries, is important. Do you feel that you will be able to reach out to them for assistance if and when you need to? What tells you this information? Have they outlined how available and accessible they will be to you during their program?

6. Connection

Very closely related to accessibility is connection. Humans are wired to connect. The need to be heard is strong in everyone. Will your coach or mentor proactively reach out to you? What tells you this? How important is this to you?

7. Extended learning

Whilst engaging a coach or mentor for a specific reason or solution, it can also be wise to consider if they may be available to help you beyond the original scope. This can be especially helpful when you contemplate what you will learn in the process and how you may wish to alter your course as a result of what you have heard/learnt/applied/experienced. Working with someone who has significant knowledge and capacity to help you beyond your original project can also save you time in the future as you are not needing to start from scratch with someone else.

8. Platform

Many coaches and mentors have their own learning platforms. If you are able to access them prior to engaging the coach, that can be highly useful for you. You may wish to consider how easy is the platform to use, navigate and find the information you need in a timely and effective manner.

9. Social proof

If the coach or mentor you are looking at has been recommended, are you able to read/view other reviews? Are they all glowingly positive? Are you able to see the connections they have in the wider social setting to understand how their knowledge, connections and experience are able to help you reach and serve your highest potential in your way?
